Chapter 16
DEMISE QUAKED AS THE gigantic hand curled around her. Aidenâs screams mixed with her own. The Hecatoncheire pulled them into the air, a mile above the ground and looked at her with his two hundred eyes. A hundred mouths broke into toothy grins.
âWhat have we here? Food?â His bellowing laugh slivered down her spine from the echoing sneers of so many lips. Each breath pushed her further into his calloused dirty hands.
Aiden waved in the air a few hands away. The Hecatoncheire dragged them closer until all she could see was a wall of identical heads and faces. Each one held a different expression, and none of them bode well.
âPlease,â Demise begged. âRelease us.â
âHa, ha, ha, ha.â His whole body bounced. âNo one leaves Tartarus.â
The Hecatoncheire, swept his arms wide, flinging Demise against the monsterâs grip. The world whirled by. Fire rose from the land nipping at her heels. She was held so tight that she could barely wiggle.
The giant jogged, covering miles in seconds. They followed the castle walls until they came to the entrance. Tall pillars ran the height of the building. Massive gates of andradite, a substance harder than diamonds. Nothing could cut through the stones.
Above the building, an iron turret rose up into the sky. Clouds gathered over the building; lightning flashed inside. The wind whipped at her face.
Aiden yelled. She couldnât make out the words above the wind and the cries of the tormented. The sound crushed her spirit almost as much as Despair had.
The Hecatoncheire shoved the gate open with fifty of his hands. The slow creak and screech reminded her of fingernails on a chalkboard. It raked through her spine, giving her the shivers. What she wouldnât give to be back above ground, safe in the other realm giving souls a moment of happiness.
Demise had no idea what this world would do to Aiden. How could they escape from here? She closed her eyes, called Death and waited for an answer. Perhaps she could save them.
There was no answering tickle, no flashing of Death in the vicinity. Perhaps she couldnât hear her here. Demise suppressed a sob. How could she save Aiden now? What about the souls of Kayla and Benny? Would they end up here, forsaken and forgotten? No, they would be worthy of Elysium, if she could find one of the judges.
The squeaking of the doors stopped after an eternity. Aidenâs features had calmed, which she hadnât expected. He should be screaming his head off, begging to leave. This had been a foolâs errand from the beginning.
The monster turned and closed the door. Another eternity of waiting, then the clang of the lock sent a shudder through her. The heavy door jamb fell into place. Demise had never been so scared.
Clouds pulsed with lightning above. Thunder rumbled and shook the castle. A world in a never-ending night of storms and torments.
In the distance, a winged Fury swooped down, cobras and asps wound around her body. In her hand, a long leather whip that she slashed at the hordes of the damned souls below her.
